What is Qi Gong?
Qi Gong, also spelled as “Chi Kung” or “Qi Gong”, is a traditional Chinese practice that involves gentle movements, breathing techniques, and meditation. Qi Gong can be translated as “cultivating life energy”.
Qigong is believed to have originated in ancient China and has been practiced for thousands of years as a way to promote physical and mental health, balance, and harmony. It is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Taoist philosophy, and aims to cultivate and balance the body’s Qi or life force.
There are many different styles of Qigong, each with its own unique movements, breathing techniques, and meditation practices. Some forms of Qi Gong are designed to promote physical health and fitness, while others focus on mental and spiritual well-being. Qi Gong is often practiced in groups or individually and can be used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments.
What do you do to keep yourself centered?
I do exactly that, I center! Centering is the first Qigong technique I ever learned and it is what I always return to when I catch myself starting to feel stressed, anxious, or tense. I also do Qi Gong before I treat a patient. Centering is an energetic and spiritual process. The first step is to make sure I am connected to both the ultimate Yin and Yang (the earth below and the skies above). I send light or roots down from my root chakra or acupuncture point Ren 1 and up from my crown chakra or acupuncture point DU 20, this is called the “Two Pole Practice”. After opening my poles, I feel connected to the universal energy that flows through all things and I am open for energy to flow through me. I release any negative energy, thoughts, and tension down to Mother Earth and open myself up for any nourishment that is offered back. Next I breathe into my heart center for as long as it takes me to get there. Center is difficult for me to explain. It is both a location within myself and within all things, but also a feeling. It is a place of comfort, peace, and serenity. It is the place where universal love circulates. It is where you can find your true self that is not affected by opinions, judgments, ego, or consciousness. In center you can find your true self; the self that knows all past and present. It is here where I meditate, where I do Qigong, and where I practice acupuncture.
